Australia’s most innovative: AFR BOSS winners call Mac Park home

Three Macquarie Park businesses have been recognised as among the most innovative in their field, further cementing our area’s reputation as a global innovation hub.

Novartis Australia, Medtronic and local landowner Frasers Property Australia have all excelled in the annual BOSS Awards, led by the Australian Financial Review.

Novartis Australia

Connect MPID member Novartis Australia (Headquarters: Waterloo Road) were recognised for their innovative “MSGo” service that combines apps and a web portal to assist patients living with multiple sclerosis. For patients it means staying connected with their health professionals remotely, and for clinicians it enables them to monitor patients without the burden of stacks of paperwork.

Novartis Australia Country President Richard Tew said he is really proud of the result:

“Traditionally patient support programs are designed for one medication, but MSGo enables real-time interconnected personalised care for not just one product, but any new treatment,” said Mr Tew.

“Once you solve a problem for one product in one country, the learnings can inform what we are doing in others.”

Medtronic

Also from Mac Park’s burgeoning medtech industry, Medtronic (Headquarters: Alma Road) came in at number 9 for their innovation in the treatment of diabetes - the MiniMed™ 770G insulin pump system.

Diabetes affects 1.8 million Australians, and about 1 million rely on insulin to keep them alive every day. Medtronic’s new pump system helps patients monitor their insulin levels and automatically adjusts their insulin intake accordingly.

Fraser’s Property Australia

But it’s not all medtech in Macquarie Park! Fraser’s Property - local landowner, Connect MPID member and co-developer of Macquarie Exchange (Waterloo Road) - were recognised as one of the most innovative construction and property companies of 2021 for their work in developing sustainable retail.

Their Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre is the first retail centre to achieve Living Building Challenge Petal Certification which acknowledges the energy, water and materials of the building and its progress toward self-sufficiency.

And the winner is… Macquarie Park!

As the home of these winning employers - and other leaders like Optus, Schneider Electric and Johnson & Johnson - Macquarie Park can fairly claim its title as Australia’s original innovation district.

Covering an area as big as Sydney’s CBD, and with a world-leading University at its heart, all the ingredients are in place for Macquarie Park to move from suburban office park to 21st century innovation centre.

Connect MPID General Manager, Mark Ames recognises the opportunity:

“These well-deserved accolades for Novartis, Medtronic and Fraser’s confirm we have some of the brightest minds in Sydney right here in Macquarie Park.

By bringing these people together in one place, and blurring the boundaries between institutions, ideas can quickly become new opportunities.”
