Art at the heart of Macquarie Park

Tucked away in Macquarie University’s sprawling campus, art lovers can find a little known gem – the Macquarie University Art Gallery.

With several new exhibitions a year, the gallery aims to engage with people from all walks of life, including those who are familiar with art and those who might be new to it. Visitors range from individual members of the public, school groups, community and business groups as well as university students.

Established in 1967, the collection has grown and developed over the years to include works by artists like Bronwyn Bancroft, Marion Borgelt, Arthur Boyd, Lawrence Daws, Paula Dawson, Rah Fizelle, Sidney Nolan, Tony Tuckson, Rosemary Valadon, and Fred Williams.

Senior curator Rhonda Davis says the aim of the gallery is not only to display artworks by Australian and international artists, but to enrich the local community’s understanding of art and to encourage conversation.

“Macquarie University is renowned for having one of the most vibrant art collections in this country representative of important works by leading Australian artists from the modern period to contemporary art.”

“Since the beginning, the Art Collection has had a profound influence on university life encapsulated with a vision and spirit of difference. Today it continues to be one of the most talked about features on the campus.”

The collection is dispersed across the whole of campus, to inspire students, staff and the many visitors who frequent the campus.

“Last year we were generously donated a teamLab artwork, who are cutting edge and world leaders in the field of creating digital artworks. This donation represented the first time a teamLab artwork entered a University Collection in Australia. The artwork will go on display in the Library later this year, so keep a look out.”
