JUST IN: Faster connections to Macquarie Park confirmed by Sydney Metro

Testing of the extension of Sydney Metro is all systems go as the new route gears up for passenger services this year - with journey times to Macquarie Park just confirmed.

Connecting our innovation district direct to the city for the first time, the world-class metro project will give commuters access to easy, fast and reliable public transport services with record travel times.

For example, passengers boarding the service at Macquarie Park will reach Crows Nest in just 13 minutes, Barangaroo in 18 Central in 24 and Sydenham in 31 - all without having to change trains!

“2024 is the year of Metro, as Australia’s biggest public transport project powers towards the finish line. Six new stations will open below the CBD, connecting our city like never before”, said Transport Minister Jo Haylen.

“We are entering the home stretch of this city-shaping project, and it’s exciting…”

The expansion of Sydney Metro will create a new thirty-minute catchment for Macquarie Park, the area seen above highlighted in white.

The new 15.5 kilometre twin metro tunnels between Chatswood and Sydenham have been travelled and trialled in preparation for the official service opening. Now, 33 of all 45 metro trains in the combined fleet have completed at least one journey between Tallawong and Sydenham.

Additionally, eight trains have successfully travelled on the new tracks simultaneously, and extensive noise trials have confirmed that predicated volume and vibration comfort levels are not exceeded.

Since April 2023, more than 7,500 hours of a total 11,000 hours of required testing have been completed.

Next steps include final integration testing between the trains, with signalling and station systems to continue. This includes assessing passenger help points and trialling passenger information displays, before heading into trial running.

Following the opening of the extension of Sydney Metro to Sydenham, transformation will continue with the extension of services from Sydenham to Bankstown. The turn-up-and-go Sydney West metro network is slated for completion in late 2025.

Last year, Connect Macquarie Park Innovation District published a new report “Get ready for more Metro, Macquarie Park!”, aiming to highlight what the expansion of the Sydney Metro will mean for our area in 2024.
