Fujitsu launches game-changing tech for Rural Fire Service

Macquarie Park headquartered Fujitsu (Talavera Road) will introduce a small, but lifesaving, piece of technology to 5000 of New South Wales Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) emergency response vehicles.

The $60 million program will see Mobile Data Terminals - a device about the size of a digital tablet - installed in RFS vehicles, transforming their mission-critical systems. The new technology will deliver briefings, satellite data, topography, incident information and intelligence instantaneously, overcoming the limitations of the current radio system in place.

The program, an extension of an existing partnership between Fujitsu and NSW RFS, comes after smoke and flames swept close to Fujitsu’s Macquarie Park headquarters, which overlook the Lane Cove National Park, in the bushfire season of November 2019.

The introduction of the technology is based on recommendations from the independent inquiry launched by the NSW Government into the 2019-2020 bushfires to ultimately improve the preparation, response and communication between firefighters.

Dave Lennon, Head of Public Sector at Fujitsu Australia, said:

“We are so proud that our dedicated emergency services practice and experienced teams are able to deliver transformational innovation that helps our heroic firefighters in life threatening situations.”

Rob Rogers, NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner said:

“We believe digitising our operations will help us be more agile and enhance our firefighting capability…. ..our partnership with Fujitsu is one example of how we’re achieving this”

Fujitsu is a member of Connect Macquarie Park Innovation District - the publisher of this article - and a leading local employer.
