Busiest year since 2019 at Macquarie Park’s Metro stations!

Passenger numbers at Macquarie Park’s Metro stations have reached the highest level of activity since 2019, suggesting growing confidence in Australia’s original innovation district. 

New data analysis from Connect Macquarie Park Innovation District revealed more than 9.5 million commuter rail trips took place in Macquarie Park in 2023 – a 37% increase on 2022, and a massive 63% increase on 2020, the first year of the global pandemic.   

August 2023 emerged as the peak month with nearly one million people using North Ryde, Macquarie Park and Macquarie University stations.    

General Manager at Connect MPID, Mark Ames, spoke to the value of the findings: 

“Our community thrives on collaboration – exciting things happen when we come together in person which is why we’re excited to see this record peak in Metro passengers coming to our district.  

We’re excited to see what happens when Metro services expand later this year to deliver an even busier year in our ecosystem in 2024.” 

 Sydney’s North West Metro currently spans from Tallawong and Rouse Hill to Macquarie Park and on to Chatswood, where services terminate. 

Further increases in commuter numbers to our district are expected with the imminent launch of the extension of Sydney Metro. This expansion promises heightened convenience travelling to Macquarie Park, with key stops including Crow’s Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo and Central.  

With an 18-minute trip direct from the city and connections to more lines, the service expansion will broaden Macquarie Park’s 30-minute commuter catchment zone, as mapped in Connect MPID’s recently published report “Get ready for more Metro, Macquarie Park”.
