Memjet opens advanced manufacturing facility in Macquarie Park
Memjet is making waves with advanced manufacturing in Australia, integrating new robotics and ultra-smart software at a new factory in Macquarie Park innovation district (Lyonpark Road).
A global pioneer of advanced digital printing technologies, Memjet “engines” are the brains of some of the world’s best-known printing brands, including Konica Minolta and Canon.
Chief Technology Officer for Memjet, Jason Thelander, said establishing their Australian advanced manufacturing centre in Macquarie Park was a smart decision:
“We have a stable economy, great scientific and engineering capability as well as a highly-skilled workforce. With new robotics and ultra-smart software, our manufacturing is competitive with Asia”
Memjet has pushed for its research and development to be Australian-led, with 183 Australian and American patents registered over the past 7 years.
The company’s “Australian Made” strategy includes sourcing most components from Australian suppliers, promising greater supply chain control. This is especially important as offshore supply chain issues have grown in prominence in recent years.
“When we reach full production about 80 per cent of the parts for our Australia-built engines will come from Australia” says Thelander,
“And 100 per cent of our output will be exported.”
The ability to be agile means AI robotics are another key priority for Memjet. These advanced technologies will promote flexibility and efficiency, delivering major automation benefits such as reduced labour headcount and more streamlined operations.
Rapid reconfiguration of production lines will mean Memjet can open their doors to other innovators and entrepreneurs.
The new Macquarie Park facility will include a collaborative manufacturing centre for external organisations.
“Our new robots and and ultra-smart software enable us to quickly manufacture high-tech, low-run components for other innovators,’ he adds. ‘We can also assemble parts with minimum human input. This is high-efficiency collaborative manufacturing — and it has a great future in Australia.”
Memjet’s story offers a glimpse at a broader landscape of innovation and technological endeavour within Macquarie Park.
Mark Ames, General Manager at Connect Macquarie Park Innovation District said Memjet enjoys the company of great neighbours;
“In addition to Memjet’s major new advanced manufacturing facility, Macquarie Park is also home to a degree training pathway in robotics at the Macquarie University School of Engineering, and global printing and imaging specialists Fujifilm, Konica Minolta and Canon.”
“With a highly qualified workforce, fantastic transport connections and affordable space to grow, we’re thrilled Macquarie Park innovation district will continue to be a place to thrive for Memjet.”
