Red-Light infractions threaten school zone safety next door to Macquarie Park

Macquarie Park commuters are being urged to be extra cautious as students return to school, with new data pinpointing one of the worst intersections for red light violations in neighbouring North Ryde.

The importance of following the road rules - particularly in school zones – is being emphasised by the National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) who revealed more than 3,200 speeding fines were issued during the first three days of the new school year.

The intersection of Cox’s Road and Lane Cove Road in North Ryde was singled out as one of the most concerning sites for red-light infringements.

78 red-light fines were issued for motorists driving through the North Ryde intersection making it the fourth worst location in New South Wales. Overall, 772 red-light fines were issued in the school year of 2022/23 in New South Wales, representing a 16% increase on the previous year for the dangerous behaviour of running red lights.

Last year the North Ryde intersection was also identified as the worst place in New South Wales for school zone speeding, with more than 5,255 drivers breaking the speed limit there in just 10 months.

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury urged commuters to take more care:

"The number of drivers fined for running red lights is alarming, with a 16 per cent jump on the previous year. We know the worst locations across the state and are urging the NSW Government to conduct an immediate safety audit of these locations."

In 2022 the NSW Government released plans to standardise speed limits and enhance conditions for pedestrians across Macquarie Park as part of 20-year masterplan for our area.
