Discover Mac Park: Step back in time 65,000 years
Macquarie University have recently opened the newest addition to their Arts Precinct – The Macquarie University History Museum - to the public for the first time. Now you can explore early Australian culture from around 65000 BCE through to ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome all in your lunchbreak.
The History Museum brings together pieces from the university’s Australian History Museum and the Museum of Ancient Cultures to form an incredible collection of more than 18,000 objects, right in the heart of Macquarie Park.
The current temporary exhibition East Meets West, the Crusades and the Age of Decolonisation, displays select pieces from the museum’s collection plus a number of notable pieces from private collections.
The ancient history collection, started just 10 years after the University was founded, is home to more than 600 papyrus scrolls and an ancient glass collection that is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere.
In the Australian history collection, you can explore artefacts, documents and materials from pre-colonisation through to the present focusing on areas like Indigenous Australia, war and society and immigration.
