Cyber security centre cements Mac Park’s position
A new Sovereign Cyber Security Centre of Excellence is to open in Macquarie Park, following a joint announcement from the NSW Government and Macquarie Telecom.
The Centre of Excellence will integrate skills, jobs and training with new and additional secure data storage to be developed at Macquarie Telecom’s Talavera Road campus.
The announcement follows a year of high-profile cyber-attacks in Australia, including at Parliament House in Canberra.
Macquarie Telecom Group CEO David Tudehope said the new centre will bridge the gap between skills and infrastructure:
“A lot of cyber security teams are understaffed. This means businesses and government can struggle to retain and attract cyber security teams…”
“…this is an investment in developing long term jobs of the future as well as building sovereign security skills and capabilities in NSW.”
The move is supported by the Australian Federal Government’s 2020 Cyber Security Strategy 2020, which will invest $1.67 billion over 10 years, and the NSW Government’s 2021 Cyber Security Strategy which seeks to establish the State as Australia’s cyber capital.
“This project will create valuable jobs in the digital and cyber security sector and deliver sovereign data centres in NSW, supporting our ambition of making NSW the cybersecurity capital of the Southern Hemisphere” said NSW Minister for Digital and Customer Service, and MP for Ryde, Victor Dominello.
The Sovereign Cyber Security Centre of Excellence will cement Macquarie Park’s position as a major player in cyber space, in addition to data centre providers NEXTDC and the Optus Macquarie University Cyber Security Hub.
