Macquarie University sustainability rankings on the rise

The Times Higher Education (THE) 2023 Impact Rankings have been released, and Macquarie University has improved its overall position by 40 places, and achieved two Top 10 rankings - including a number one spot.

This list looks specifically at how universities perform against the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and this year featured 1591 institutions from 112 countries and regions.

Carefully calibrated indicators are used to provide a comprehensive and balanced comparison, and four broad areas of research, stewardship, outreach and teaching are subject to assessment.

Macquarie University achieved 39th place globally, and 9th in Australia. The institution achieved first place in the subcategory of SDG14 (Life Below Water), and fourth for SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) as well.

It also achieved distinguished rankings of:

  • 12th globally for SDG8, Decent Work and Economic Growth

  • 13th globally for SDG13, Climate Action

  • 18th globally for SDG15, Life on Land

This is an extraordinary feat for Macquarie University, who received a total score of 92.3 out of 100.

Vice Chancellor and President S Bruce Dowton celebrated Macquarie University’s success, emphasising the institution’s commitment to delivering genuine change in the sustainability field and beyond:

“Our world-renowned research and education programs are helping create the next generation of leaders who are prepared to engage with the complex problems and opportunities of today and the future.

Our sustainability strategy is aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and it is wonderful to see these efforts recognised through the Impact Rankings.”

Macquarie University Vice-President, Finance and Resources, and the executive officer responsible for sustainability, Robin Payne, added that a long-term, forward-thinking approach is central to the University’s efforts.

“It is good to see this work over many years being recognised as we seek to accelerate our efforts in future years to make a positive impact”
