Three in a row on Talavera Road as data centre campus expands

Macquarie Data Centres (MDC), part of the ASX-listed Macquarie Technology Group, has announced a major expansion of its Macquarie Park campus.

Plans for MDC’s forthcoming new data centre, Intellicentre 3 Super West (IC3) will see the facility expand by 41% from its original planned capacity, to a total 45 megawatts.

The centre is the third to be built at MDC’s Talavera Road campus, with data centres an increasing area of focus for Macquarie Park innovation district.

The upgraded plans will tailor the data centre design to meet rapidly rising demand for power and data-hungry AI workloads in Australia, while creating an ideal home for hyperscale cloud customers.

Macquarie Data Centres Group Executive, David Hirst, highlighted the speed at which demand was growing:

“According to CSIRO, the Australian economy could gain $315 billion by 2028 through the integration of AI. However, unlocking the full potential of AI hinges on the availability of advanced AI-ready data centres.

To ensure optimal performance in training and inference of these AI models, we are designing our upcoming data centres to meet and surpass the demanding requirements for higher densities.”

A $160 million capital raise in June further endorsed Macquarie’s ambitious expansion plans.

MDC’s expanded IC3 sits alongside a new data centre under construction at Stockland’s neighbouring M_Park development, and rumoured plans for NEXTDC’s fifth centre, a 60MW behemoth mooted to go above Macquarie Park Metro station.
