Sydney Metro expansion supercharges connectivity for Macquarie Park and beyond!
Yesterday marked a key milestone for Sydney's transport network with the launch of the new Sydney Metro extension. This upgrade stretches from the city’s northwest through Macquarie Park and Sydney Harbour to Sydenham, significantly enhancing connectivity and setting the stage for improved travel across the city.
For Macquarie Park, this development is transformative. The addition of 15.5 kilometres of new metro rail, six new underground stations, and upgrades to existing ones greatly enhance access to the innovation district. Passengers now experience high-speed travel beneath Sydney Harbour at 100 kilometres per hour, with views through the front window of the driverless train as it glides through twin tunnels up to 40 metres below the water’s surface.
Trains now run every four minutes during peak times and every seven minutes off-peak, significantly improving travel efficiency for Macquarie Park commuters. With the capacity to accommodate up to 34,000 passengers per hour during peak periods, these new services will alleviate congestion and ease pressure on local road networks. The extension strengthens Macquarie Park’s connection with Sydney’s workforce, visitors, and students.
Travel times have been notably reduced, with journeys from Chatswood to Martin Place now taking just 11 minutes, and the full Sydenham to Tallawong route under 60 minutes. The line is scheduled to extend to Bankstown by 2026, with conversion work on the Sydenham to Bankstown segment set to commence soon. This expanded access is expected to attract top talent and drive business growth across Sydney.
As Connect Macquarie Park Innovation District looks to the future, we are excited about the transformative potential of the Sydney Metro expansion. This enhanced connectivity not only brings Macquarie Park closer to Sydney’s broader economic and academic hubs but also positions us at the forefront of innovation.
